Homeownership for all just took a big step forward for unwed parents and their children.
Unwed parents need not wait till they’re 35 years old to buy a flat.
Currently, HDB allows unwed parents aged 25 up to 35 to buy a 2-room Flexi flat in non-mature estates or a resale flat, albeit on a case-by-case basis.
Following the announcement, there’s greater flexibility for this demographic.
According to the Joint MND-HDB Press Release published on 4 March 2020, single unwed parents aged 21 and above will be able to buy bigger homes – up to a three-room BTO flat in a non-mature estate – as well as two-room Flexi flats in non-mature estates and resale flats.
This was announced as one of a series of measures announced by National Development Minister Lawrence Wong to “make housing more accessible and to better support the diverse housing needs of all Singaporeans,” according to the press release.
Alternatively, for those who may not have the financial means to purchase a flat, these households can be considered for public rental. Unwed parents ought to approach HDB with their housing requests. It will be examined on a case-by-case basis.
