By virtue of Proclamation No. 662, October is the month we honor the importance of housing in nation-building and the holistic well-being of each Filipino family. And this year’s theme is “Safe and Resilient Shelter in the Time of Pandemic and Changing Climate.”
The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD), together with other real estate groups and key shelter agencies, are committed to making housing more accessible to more Filipinos during the pandemic. To celebrate, a series of housing fairs, exhibits, and virtual platforms such as “Kapihan sa DHSUD: Housing Matters” is set to be launched this month.
Groups such as the Subdivision and Housing Developers Association Inc. (SHDA), Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Associations (CREBA), National Real Estate Association Inc. (NREA), and Organization of Socialized and Economic Housing Developers Inc. (OSHDP) have also reaffirmed their commitment to solving the country’s current housing backlog.
Included in DHSUD’s 20-year roadmap is building homes near new transport infrastructure, railway stations, or transit-oriented locations. According to CREBA, this is meant to improve the quality of life for Filipinos by providing better access to economic opportunities through mass transit systems.
DHSUD announced last August that it has been reviewing price ceilings for various housing developments, as well. Since 2014, the price ceiling set for economic housing projects is at P1.7 million. The institution is considering factoring in the cost of materials and the current income of homebuyers. Final pricing standards are set to come out in the last quarter of 2021.
