Cultural Diversity

While all its residents are “Davaoeños,” Davao City has done a good job of recognizing its local communities, both indigenous and foreign. The city is home to six Moro and five Lumad communities. These include the Maranao, Tausug, Iranun, Maguindanaon, Kagan, and Sama, as well as the Ubo Manuvo, Matigsalog, Klata, Ata, and Tagabawa.

Meanwhile, small groups of migrants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, China, and more are all integrated into city life. There is even a respectable expat community in the locality. 

This is why, other than Cebuano, indigenous and foreign languages are spoken in different circles, from Hiligaynon, Chavacano, and Giangan to even Hokkien. The majority of residents are mostly comprised of Roman Catholics. Independent religious organizations have a strong presence, too. Non-Christian faiths such as Islam, Hinduism, Judaism, and more are also part of the local culture.

Kadayawan Festival remains the largest and most popular celebration in the city, which, in pre-colonial Philippines, was meant as a celebration of the harvest and thanksgiving to nature. Economic Security and Stability

The Department of Trade and Industry’s 2020 Cities and Municipalities Competitive Index placed Davao City at the second spot out of 33 highly urbanized cities. The factors for the high ranking include infrastructure, resiliency, government efficiency, and economic dynamism. It was ranked first in presence of business and professional organizations and productivity, as well as second in local economic structure and increase in employment. The city also ranked first in road network and health.

Agriculture is still considered its top sector. Plantations, like the ones for coffee, pineapple, banana, and coconut, dominate its local economy. The chocolate industry has thrived, as well (Davao City is named the “Chocolate Capital of the Philippines, after all). Davao City has quite the BPO sector, as well. The Davao Gulf, on the other hand, offers fisherfolk plenty of livelihood opportunities.

Davao City is easily accessible by almost all mediums of transportation. Whether it be air, sea, or land, the city boasts a robust transport system for tourists and residents alike. Jeepneys, vans, buses, tricycles, and more contribute to the city’s movement. The Philippine–Japan Friendship Highway makes it easy, too, as this connects to major seaports in the country. It’s Francisco Bangoy International Airport is also a leading airport in Mindanao.
