In its earliest days, Yishun was dotted with pepper and pineapple plantations. Its name is the Mandarin translation of Nee Soon, the name of the ‘pineapple king’ and rubber magnate, Mr Lim Nee Soon.

What Makes Yishun Town Interesting?

Developed in the 1980s, Yishun is one of the earliest middle-aged HDB towns, with the first flats being built at Chong Pang.

The town was also one of 3 pilot towns to be rejuvenated under the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme in September 2007. It has since undergone many transformations to become the vibrant town it is today.

How Many HDB Flats in Yishun?

Once an area of pepper and pineapple plantations, Yishun is currently a bustling residential estate in the north part of Singapore. An estimated 193,300 residents call Yishun home and the HDB manages 60,904 HDB flats in the town (as of 31 March 2017).

Why Should You Live in Yishun?

Leisure and Recreation

The main go-to places in Yishun are the Northpoint Shopping Centre and Yishun GV cinema, which provide residents with their basic needs such as grocery shopping and entertainment. The only shopping mall in Yishun is conveniently located next to the Yishun MRT Station also houses a community library.

There are also several “heartland” neighbourhood centre around Yishun that caters to the everyday needs of the residents. A typical heartland neighbourhood centre would consist of stores such as provision stores, coffee shops, fast food and supermarket chains, mini-marts, clinics, local banks and salons.

Chong Pang City, which is located in Neighbourhood 1, is a famous heartland centre which is well known for its cheap durians.

Yishun is also served by SAFRA Yishun Country Club and the Orchid Country Club, which houses amenities such as a golf driving range, bowling centre, gym, tennis court, adventure sports centre, swimming pool and a karaoke centre, and Orchid Country Club also offer accommodations as well for staycations.

Under the ROH programme, Yishun Park was transformed into Yishun Pond Park, with an iconic 3-storey lookout tower amidst the lush landscaping of Yishun Pond. A 94m winding ramp leads up to the viewing deck, which gives a panoramic view of Yishun Central.

Healthcare

Yishun is also served by two hospitals, the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH) and the Yishun Community Hospital (YCH). Spanning over 3.5 hectares in the Yishun Central Area, the 590-bed general and acute care hospital serves the medical needs of residents in the north.

To augment KTPH, the Yishun Community Hospital (YCH), a 425-bed hospital for sub-acute and rehabilitative care patients, was built beside KTPH and opens in Dec 2015.

Any Future Plans for Yishun?

An interesting development to look out for in the expansion plan of Yishun is the sub-urban malls such as Northpoint City, which is a massive expansion of Northpoint that includes a new bus interchange, a condominium (North Park Residences) and a community club (the first to be located in a shopping mall). Northpoint City will be completed this year.

For foodies in the north, we have some good news. A new hawker centre next to Yishun Park will provide more places for eating out, while a foreign system school will be also be built.

The new Yishun Integrated Transport Hub will open in 2019, and will include an air-conditioned bus interchange, with an underpass link to Yishun MRT station. The hub will be part of the Northpoint City development that will include private residences, a retail mall, a community centre, and a town plaza.
