If Jane and Tarzan had a treehouse in the jungle, I bet the view would be similar to what Jamie Yeo sees when she looks out her living room or bedroom window. Trees — trees everywhere. And her two kids grew up with an expansive view of gorgeous sunsets from the comfort of their living room, courtesy of her wide windows that overlook the lush greenery. 

Jamie and co. moved to the U.K, though, and that’s why she’s renting out her treetop-like 3-bedder condo at Sunset Way to, as she said, to “a very nice couple”. 

Funny story about that, actually. Not about the couple, but about her rental apartment. She almost didn’t get the gorgeous treehouse-like condo because of the “rude and dismissive” property agent who didn’t want to show her the unit and told her she wouldn’t like the apartment because it was a walk-up.

Luckily for Jamie, the sellers of the unit hired another agent. Only this time, it was like Cinderella meeting Fairy Godmother. Though instead of Prince Charming waiting for her at the ball, it was the keys to the treetop-like house waiting for Jamie.

She had been eyeing the unit “for like forever”, Jamie said in an interview, and that she “just knew” she was going to live there — after just 15 minutes of seeing the place. “I love nature and I really love the fact that I get a 360-degree view of trees and you can hear the birds chirping,” she said. 

Well, she got it in the end despite making an offer lower than the selling price. The agent, whom Jamie describes as amazing, helped her (remember: she’s the buyer) to negotiate the price. 

But here’s the thing: When Jamie first began her search, she had a hard time finding an apartment due to her budget. “I wasted a lot of time viewing homes that weren’t ideal,” she said. “In hindsight, it would’ve been really helpful if I had a good agent narrow down the search for me.”

As she’s considered a freelancer, the bank will only consider 70% of her declared income as a basis for a loan offer. This is due to the 30% haircut that freelancers, or self-employed people, will receive from the bank.

“In the end, they got me to put some money into a fixed deposit before they agreed to a home loan,” she said. So things still worked out. “But I tell you what, I thought I would have had to forfeit my deposit. It was very stressful.”
