Why Sembawang?

Sembawang is named after the Sembawang tree, which can be found at Sembawang Park. The town used to be the site of Nee Soon Rubber estate, and was once a naval base with bustling shipyards.

What Makes Sembawang Town Interesting?

In 1983, the opening of the Singapore Naval Base led to the development of this area, and military installations such as airbases and barracks were built in the vicinity. Today, we are reminded of the town’s maritime past through the nautical design details of blocks around the neighborhood. Most roads in Sembawang today are also named after various Royal Navy Dockyards, warships and Admirals, that drew reference to the town’s heritage as a British naval base.

How Many HDB Flats in Sembawang?

An estimated 72,500 HDB residents call Sembawang home, and currently, there are 22,872 flats in the town (as of 31 March 2017).

Why Should You Live in Sembawang?

One of Sembawang’s distinct landmarks is the 4km-long Sungei Sembawang, the main river that runs through the town. Sembawang is home to one of the few parks in Singapore with a natural beach.

Nature and Recreation

Developed in the 1970s, the Sembawang Park is a popular spot for camping or a day by the beach. A wide range of fauna, flora, and bird species have made the park their nesting grounds. Within the Sembawang Park is a tranquil park away from the bustle of the city. With a beautiful beachside and a stunning view, it is a popular fishing ground and a great place for family and friends to get together. Fitness enthusiasts can jog and swim while anglers cast their lines into the sea. Shelters and barbecue pits are located along the park and the beach, allowing families and friends to barbecue by the seaside. Alternatively, enjoy the gentle sea breeze and sound of the waves as you stroll along one of the few remaining natural beaches of Singapore.

Historical Interests

Blending nature with history, the calm and serene park also gives visitors a glimpse of Singapore’s naval heritage. Walk along the restored old pathways used during the British occupation or visit the Beaulieu House, the Sembawang jetty and the remains of the 1920s Seletar Pier. The park is also surrounded by other places of historical interest like the Admiralty House, Kampong Wak Hassan, Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang, Sembawang memorial and the Sembawang Shipyard, which was a British Naval Base from 1938 to 1968. Sembawang Park also stands Beaulieu House, a black and white bungalow adorned with Victorian-style ironwork and Neo-Classical plaster details, which was granted conservation status by the Urban Redevelopment Authority in 2005.

Leisure and Shopping

Sembawang Town is currently supported by Sembawang MRT Station. The town is also served by shopping centres such as Sun Plaza and Sembawang Mart.
