Advantages of Renting a Home Close to Business Districts

Living close to the business district makes me feel like everything is within my reach.

In our first year of renting in Singapore, we lived far from the central business district (CBD) and it made me wonder what we were missing out on. We decided to rent a home near the CBD for our next tenancy after considering these factors.

Advantages of Renting a Home in the CBD

1. Save Time

The one-hour travel time to work plus another hour going back is equivalent to 56 hours in a month. Living in the CBD only consumes 30 minutes of my day to-and-fro, which means I only spend 14 hours a month to travel to work and back home.

Leaving my workplace at 7pm means I can be home by 7:15pm, I can do more chores and other self-progressing activities like sports or learning a new recipe.

2. Save Energy

Renting a home far from the business districts means you need to wake up and prepare for work at least 2 hours before work begins. I used to wake up at 6am to arrive at the office by 9am. Now, I can wake up at 8am and be at my workplace by 9am.

Even if we only sit or stand inside the trains or buses when going home, spending an hour in a jam-packed public transport is still draining. Upon reaching home, I used to spend another hour or two to rest my exhausted body, then it’s too late to do anything else and I begin to prepare for bedtime, which is repeated every week.
Not only that, renting a home near the CBD also helped me become more proactive with my lifestyle goals while being more productive at work.

3. Easy Access to Everywhere

There are a lot of housing estates to choose from when renting a home in Singapore. Accessibility is one of the reasons why we opted to live and stay within the CBD for four years now; it is a few kilometres away from the parks, commercial establishments, tourist spots, Changi airport and of course to work.
Previously, travelling from the West to the East was very laborious and time consuming but now that we live in the Central Region of Singapore, we can easily move to the East, West, North or South, not needing to miss out on important occasions because the places are too far.

4. Save Money

It may be counterintuitive, but staying at the CBD actually saves you money. It is a common perception that staying far from the CBD is cheaper, but there’s no huge difference with the cost of home rental especially with the current market situation of home rental in Singapore.

I used to spend at least $100 monthly for my fare cards, after moving to the CBD, I only spend $50 a month. In a year, I have saved $600.
Staying far from the CBD means that during night hangouts or visiting a friend, you need to head back home latest by 10pm so you may reach your destination before the public transportation comes to a halt. If not, you spend more on the taxi or other means of transportation.

Before we finally decide to move to the CBD, I calculated the amount of money we can save with the time factor. How much is one hour of your time worth? Multiply it by the hours you will save each month! It’s all about perspective and time is money.

Choosing a home rental in Singapore is a personal choice, I hope you will find that place that will serve as your home away from home. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter where you are, but who you are with.
