When it comes down to buying, selling, subletting or renting a home, it can be quite an overwhelming process when you’re venturing in uncharted territory alone, especially without the proper guidance or background knowledge in property. In order to make sure the agent is properly certified, it is important that every homeowner, aspiring or otherwise, is aware of how to differentiate between an agent who is holding a valid Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) license to the ones who don’t.

All agents are only allowed to conduct estate agency work if they have a valid license or registration issued by the CEA.

Here are 4 steps on how you can ensure your agent has a valid CEA license:

  1. Go to CEA‘s official website
  2. Click on “Check if your agent is registered
  3. Enter your salesperson’s name or registration number (you can find this on his/her business card or ID nametag)
  4. Click on “Search”

If you can find your salesperson in the search results, then you have found your answer – he/she is officially registered. If not, that is a definite sign that he/she does not hold a valid CEA license and is therefore not qualified to be your agent.

On top of verifying whether an agent is registered, the CEA Public Register also lets you know whether they were disciplined by the Council within the last three years; any awards given to them by the Council; and a record of their closed HDB resale transactions in the last 2 years. A wealth of information indeed!
