Zuraida Kamaruddin, Minister of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) says that they aim to transform Pengerang, a municipal area in Kota Tinggi, Johor, into the first model Smart City within the next five years.
She announced this during the handing over of smart vehicles to the Pengerang Municipal Council at the Ministry of Housing and Local Government headquarters earlier this week. The event was in support of the ministry’s initiatives to promote Pengerang as an intelligent and sustainable city under the flagship Smart City programme with Green initiatives and low carbon emissions.
“The support of the Ministry of Housing and Local Government is aligned with the main agenda of the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (RMK-12) which is to develop cities all across Malaysia as Smart Cities. This is also in line with the wishes of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Prime Minister of Malaysia to create integrated Smart Cities with exceptional technology in city services that will enhance safety and security as well as improve the quality of living for Malaysians.”
During the event, KPKT also introduced the Malaysia Smart City framework that was launched by Mahathir in September 2019. This comprehensive framework includes all three phases of the Malaysian Government’s plans with the private sector to develop more Smart Cities in Malaysia.
“Prior to this, KPKT announced that Pengerang was chosen to become the model Smart City for the Country and its development will be guided by the Malaysia Smart City framework that was prepared by KPKT.”
